Users can choose between Miscellaneous, Sheet Fed, Web Fed, Flexo, Digital and Continuous Fed printing machines:

 

Depending on this selection, PrintVis requires different default values entered and production gets calculated differently based on these values.


Fort example, sheetfed press speed gets calculated in number of “sheet passes through press” per hour, and we have 2 press sheet dimensions to work with: width and length.
Here is how specification page of a PrintVis Case looks when a sheet-fed press is used:

 

 

Webfed press calculates the speed in “linear feet of a substrate” per hour, and we work with roll (reel) width and cut-off (which depends on the cylinder size).

Digital presses calculate speed in number of “sheet passes through press” per hour, same as sheetfed presses.
However, there are no plates – and the “inks” are usually set to calculate as “click charges”.
Specification page looks exactly the same as for sheet-fed presses.


Flexo presses calculate speed the same way as web fed presses, but setup usually includes tool codes and imposition codes. 
We can calculate quantity as usual “no. of copes” or as “copies per roll”, and Independent surcharges can be used if we choose to.

 

Continuous-fed machines calculate speed in linear feet as well, but they have no “rotations” and no fixed “cut-offs”.
An example of such press would be a roll-fed digital label printer or a wide format roll-fed inkjet press.

In PrintVis Case, on the “Specifications” page we see the following data:

In the “Quantity” section, we can see “Net” (on the left hand side) and “Net in ft” (on the right hand side).


“Net” represents "Operations Per Length", a number of operations per 1 linear foot = 1 printing pass 
(back + forth) - how many printing operations we can do per 1 linear foot.
If we print 1"- wide band of an image with every pass, it will take 12 passes to do 1 foot.
If we print 1.5"- wide band of an image with every pass, it will take only 8 passes to do 1 foot.

 

We need to make sure only these formulas are used for "net" calculations:
Formula 22 (# of prints including scrap – or # of operations)
Or formula 240 (length of paper with scrap, this shows # of linear feet).

 
Example: we have a 100"- long banner to print. 100" = 8.33 ft. 
On our continuous-fed press, we do 1 imaging pass every 1.5", which means we are doing 8 imaging passes per foot.

So, 8.33 ft X 8 passes/foot = 66.7 imaging passes total (rounded-up to 67):



 

Also, to be able to see the scrap on the continuous-fed press represented in feet, remember to enable "scrap unit" as "Length" when setting up a Configuration for that press.


For example, if I want to see the "Net in ft", "Scrap in ft" and "Gross in ft" when I am looking at the "Specifications page" on the Case that uses the roll-fed Inkjet press,
I make sure to calculate my scrap in feet and set the "Scrap Unit" to "Length" on the Configuration Card:
